ティーンドラマというと、テーマ性が低く娯楽性が高いと思われがちですが、アメリカで大ヒットを記録したティーンドラマの数々を細かく分析すると、子どもの視点から大人社会の矛盾がうまく描かれており、とても示唆的であることがわかります。このブログでは、2000年代•2010年代に大ヒットを記録した5つのドラマを軸として、アメリカティーンドラマの魅力を紹介していきます！
①Gossip Girl 現代の『グレートギャツビー』
女性からの圧倒的支持で知られる『ゴシップガール』ですが、ダンハンフリーの視点からこの物語を捉えれば、男性も十分に楽しめる作品です。特にシーズン1は、『グレートギャツビー』の構図そのもので、社交界の花であるセリーナヴァンダーウッドセンに対するダンハンフリーの憧れが物語の軸になっています。
プアな主人公がリッチなヒロインに恋をし、交わるはずのない世界が交わっていくというストーリーは、『The.OC』とも似ています。ティーンというと、無邪気な心がだんだんを失われ階級差を意識し出す年齢でもあり、それと同時に階級固定的な大人たちへの反発心を示す年齢でもあると言えます。そんな時期を扱った作品であるからこそ、階級差を超える恋愛はロマンチックである共に、大人たちへの反抗という意味でスリリングでもあり、視聴者からするととてもエキサイティングであると言えます。
②Gilmore Girls 本物の上流階級
『ゴシップガール』はマンハッタンに住むセレブたちが主な登場人物ですが、ある意味では「成金」ということもでき、アメリカの階級的に頂点にあるとは言えません。「安定感」という意味で階級の頂点にいる子どもたちを描いた作品としては、『ギルモアガールズ』が挙げられます。『ゴシップガール』の中でもブレアが、ギルモアガールズに言及するシーンがあるなど、マンハッタンのティーンもローリーたちの世界観に憧れを持っていることがよくわかります。
③The O.C 西海岸の「華やかさ」
④One Tree Hill 「体育会系と文化系」
『The O.C』、『ギルモアガールズ』、『ゴシップガール』はお金持ちの華やかな生活が描かれており、ある種「憧れのティーン」がそれぞれ提示されています。それに対して舞台を田舎に設定し、等身大のティーンたちを描こうとしたのが「one tree hill」であると言えるでしょう。
